Salkantay Machu Picchu 5 Days

The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is the best alternative to the Inca Trail. It has huge picturesque snow-capped mountains, lush lowland jungle and old Inca ruins. On the route the first two days are dominated by the impressive mountains of Salkantay and Huamantay on the third day you descend to the warm cloud forest, to reach Aguas Calientes on the fourth day. You visit Machupicchu on the last day.

Day 1: Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa

On the first day of our trek, we will pick you up from your hotel at 05:30 in the morning and travel by bus for 3 hours to Mollepata. We will stop here for 30 minutes for breakfast and then continue another 30 minutes to Challacancha, the starting point of our journey. You will have fantastic views throughout the day as we are surrounded in vibrant green mountains, a variety of native plants and flowers with indigenous birds fluttering about. Towards the end of the day we will see the snowcapped peaks of Humantay and Salkantay (the Savage) looming high above us. The hike is 3 hours to Soraypampa (4000m / 12750ft) which is our camp site for the night. Once we have lunch, we will hike 2 ½ hours to visit Humantay lake. (L,D)

Day 2: Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass –Chaullay

Today will be a long day, as it starts right after breakfast with a 3 hour hike to the Salkantay mountain pass (4,650m/15,367ft) for amazing views of the surrounding glaciers and lakes. We will continue down to Wayraqmachay for lunch and jump back onto the trail for another 3 more hours as we head towards the small village of Chaullay for a special warm nights’ sleep. (B,L,D)

Day 3: Colpapampa – Lucmabamaba – Hot springs

Today will be an easy trek compared to yesterday! We will spend 3 hours walking through a lush tropical rainforest enjoying the fruit bearing trees, coffee trees, cacao trees, undulating fruit plantations, flowering orchids and plenty of birds. We arrive at the village of Sahuayacu for lunch and enjoy some free time to rest. From here, we will take local transportation to Santa Teresa, where our camp site is located, and enjoy the rest of the afternoon in the natural hot springs of Cocalmayo. (B,L,D)

Day 4: Lucmabamba – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes

After breakfast, we will continue along the ancient and remote Inca Trail for 3 hours uphill to the Lucmabamba pass (2,700m). Along the way, you will need to pinch yourself as you will witness fantastic views of the majestic valleys and fruit plantations. We arrive at the Llactapata Inca Ruins, which are located right in front of Machu Picchu and you can enjoy the distant view of the citadel at Machu Picchu and its surrounding mountains - Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu and the Aobamba Canyon. (B,L,D)

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

After breakfast in the hotel, we will travel ½ hour by bus to Machu Picchu for a 2 ½ hour walking tour of the site, visiting the temples, palaces and many other interesting places.
