Thousands of people come to Peru each year to hike the classic Inca Trail. Given the restricted number of daily permits, the Inca Trail is in high demand, often booking up 5-6 months in advance during high season. This hike is a great option to the classic Inca Trail as its dominated by glaciers and a glut of peaks above 5000m. If you love adventure and the mountainous landscape, then this option is for you!
TREK ANCASCOCHA MACHUPICCHU 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS
ITINERARY
Day 1: Cusco – Soqma – Chancachuco
We depart from Cusco in the morning (06:00) and drive 2 ½ hours to Soqma (3,205 m / 10,512 ft) located next to the Sacred Valley. This is the starting point of our adventure and is the place where we meet the horsemen that will join us for our hike.
We will travel for approx. 1 hour to the Perolniyoc waterfall lookout, which is a spectacular place to take pictures and enjoy of the landscape. We will continue on that path to the Inca ruins of Perolniyoq and explore the area; then proceed to Rayan, a small Andean community, where we have a bite to eat. Our journey will continue for three more hours when we arrive at the Kuychi Qas´ssa mountain Pass (4,400mtasl 14,100 ft). From here it is possible to see the Sacred Valley and all the snowcapped mountains in the distance. We follow the trail for another hour to our camp site at Chancachuco.
Day 2: Chancachuco – Ancascocha - Muyumuyu
After enjoying a filling breakfast, we will depart at 07: 00 for a 4 hour trek uphill that will be well worth the hike, as we will enjoy incredible views of the jagged mountain peaks, glaciers, lagoons, llamas and Andean falcons. You will be able to see some amazing views of the Chancachuco Valley on one side of the pass and the Sacred Valley of the Incas on the other. We will travel downhill for 2 hours to reach the Chancachuco valley, and here we will enjoy a much deserved lunch break.
After we enjoy some food, our trail will ascend and follow an ancient path that is considered to be a special one as the harmony of nature blends perfectly with the surrounding mountains and glaciers. Our path drops from here to the small community of Ancascocha (3,700 m/12,136 ft) and we will set up camp here for the evening.
Day 3: Muyu Muyu community - Paucar Cancha
This will be another long but enjoyable day as we trek by glaciers, old Inca sites and along the original Inca Trail. During our hike to Muyu Muyu, the trail turns narrow and we will have beautiful views of ancient Andean community’s. The Suyt´tu Rumiyoq and Qéska tribes have lived in this area for centuries. The trail will eventually bring us to our camp site in the Paucar Cancha archeological area (3,000 m/10.000 ft).
Day 4: Paucar Cancha – Pisqa Cuchu– Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes
From Paucar Cancha we will descend to the community of Huayllabamba, which is the first camp site for the classic Inca Trail, then we continue another 1 ½ hours to the unique Inca site of Llaqtapata and take part in a guided tour. Following the tour, we will head back out onto the trail until we reach Km 82, which is the start of the classic Inca Trail. We stop for lunch in the Pisqacuchu Community and then continue by bus to Ollantaytambo (2,792 m/9,158 ft) where we will catch the train to Aguas Calientes and transfer to your hotel.
Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
After breakfast in the hotel, we will travel ½ hour by bus to Machu Picchu for a 2 ½ hour walking tour of the site, visiting the temples, palaces and many other interesting places. You will have time to climb up Huayna Picchu that overlooks the ruins. We will return to Aguas Calientes at about 2pm to take the train back to Cusco.
